A Day in the Life: Mom, Dad, and the Balancing Act at Patriot Acres

Life at Patriot Acres is anything but ordinary. Our days are full of homeschooling, farm chores, work meetings, and plenty of family time. While I (Mom) work full-time from home in my corporate job, my husband takes the lead on running the farm and homeschooling our 9-year-old son, Parker. Here’s a little peek into what a typical day looks like for us.

Early Morning: Starting the Day Our day kicks off early. While I get ready to dive into emails and morning calls over a cup of coffee, my husband gets Parker up and moving. Breakfast is usually a grab and go, but occasionally my husband or I are able to squeak out cooking a hearty breakfast and when we do it’s often made with ingredients we’ve gotten from the farm.

Once the plates are cleared, my husband and Parker begin their school day. Parker is homeschooled, and my husband handles most of the teaching. We also mix in some great resources like local cohorts, classes at Code Ninjas, and other activities to make learning fun and dynamic. It’s a collaborative approach that works beautifully for Parker’s curious mind.

Midday: Juggling Work and Farm Life By mid-morning, I’m deep into spreadsheets, juggling conflicting meetings, and emails while my husband keeps Parker on track with his lessons. Around lunchtime, my husband might tackle a few farm chores—feeding animals, checking fences, or working in the garden—while Parker dives into his favorite video games, Fortnite and Roblox.

Sometimes, I get to sneak away from my desk for a quick break and say hi to the chickens or check on whatever my husband and Parker are up to. It’s a nice way to reset before diving back into work.

Afternoon: Finishing Strong After lunch, the homeschooling wraps up, and Parker often has a class or activity outside the house—like coding at Code Ninjas or Science Club at 4-H. My husband makes sure Parker gets there while I power through my afternoon meetings.

On the farm, afternoons can be the busiest time of day. My husband might be fixing equipment, gathering eggs, or preparing for seasonal work. There’s always something that needs attention, and Parker gets to see firsthand what hard work and dedication look like.

Evening: Family Time Once the workday ends for me and the chores wind down, we all come together for dinner. This is often my favorite part of the day. We share stories, laugh about Parker’s school adventures, and catch up on everything that happened on the farm.

Evenings are for slowing down. Sometimes, we play games, read, or watch a movie as a family. And yes, there are nights when my husband and I just crash—farm life and corporate life combined can be a lot!

Gratitude for Our Unique Life It might not be the typical family dynamic, but it works for us. My husband’s dedication to homeschooling and managing the farm allows our family to thrive, and I’m so grateful to have a partner who wears so many hats. It’s a team effort, and I wouldn’t trade our busy, beautiful days for anything.

Do you have a unique family routine? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
